Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek for the American Hosta Society, 'Urajiro Amagi Iwa' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a white-backed form of *Hosta* 'Amagi Iwa'. It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with dark green, moderately rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and an intense glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 32 inches (81.3 cm) and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm), with a semi-upright, moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage and glaucous undersides are most pronounced. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders but not for small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
