Overview

Registered in 2009 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Twilight', 'Academy Nightfall' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the undersides and a dark green, flat margin. The foliage is dull on top and lightly cupped, while the scape transitions from medium green to purple toward the tip, adding subtle color contrast.

In the Garden

'Academy Nightfall' reaches approximately 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate and a dense, mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border; it is not recommended for container culture due to its large spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Academy Nightfall' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, slug damage may occur on the broad leaves in damp conditions.
