Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Tilt-A-Whirl' is a small, upright cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Corkscrew' (pod parent) and *H.* 'June' (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinctive for its heavily twisted, folded, and wavy lance-shaped leaves of medium blue-green, which bear a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.

In the Garden

This compact hosta reaches approximately 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved cultivars, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its small size makes it suitable for troughs, containers, or the front of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, textured leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions. Deer may browse the foliage in areas where they are prevalent.
