Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Sporty' is a small-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' with unknown pollen parent. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its compact mound of lance-shaped, light green leaves marked by unstable streaks of varying yellow shades, set off by gold margins and slightly rippled, twisted edges.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Sporty' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter and 6 inches (16 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small stature makes it well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes; it also adapts well to container culture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer in areas where these pests are prevalent.
