Overview

Registered in 2004 by H. & D. Benedict, this small hosta cultivar is a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Tsuma Tajima'. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with unstable, streaked and mottled margins in varying shades of yellow, combined with red-purple speckling extending three-quarters up the petioles and the full length of the flower scapes.

In the Garden

'Hideko Tajima' forms a low, mound-like clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small woodland perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its compact size and shiny, ovate leaves make it suitable for container culture or the front of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer, which may damage the foliage.
