Overview

Registered in 2000 from unknown parentage, 'Spingarn's Japan' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its compact mound form and variegated foliage. The leaves feature medium green margins with slightly shiny surfaces, rounded bases, and three pairs of veins, reaching 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) in length and 1 inch (2.5 cm) in width.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a low mound 2 inches (5.1 cm) in height and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and performs well in rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its miniature size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, and it pairs effectively with other small woodland perennials such as dwarf ferns or tiarella.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
