Overview
Registered in 2001 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Cantabi' is a miniature cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and medium green, slightly rippled leaf margins. The ovate leaves, which measure 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) long and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) wide, have flat bases and moderate waviness, while the scapes produce colorful flowers on green stems reaching 11 to 17 inches (27.9 to 43.2 cm) in height.
In the Garden
This compact, mound-forming plant reaches 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 13.25 inches (33.7 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate, making it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaves retain their glaucous quality, and pairs well with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its miniature size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Cantabi' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
