Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Riviera Sunset' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Beatrice' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Leather Sheen' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its four-tone leaf coloration, where a medium green center is bordered by an irregular, orange-yellow margin, with overlapping tonal zones between the two.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, fast-growing mound reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its small stature and dense habit also make it an effective groundcover in shaded areas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
