Overview
Registered in 2007, 'Appetizer' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a complex cross involving *Hosta* 'Swoosh', *H. longissima*, *H.* 'Bright Lights', and *H. venusta*. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with yellow margins that fade to gold, combined with a compact, low mound habit.
In the Garden
'Appetizer' reaches approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, forming a dense mound with moderate growth. It is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging, and performs well in containers due to its small size. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera* cultivars, or low-growing sedges. It tolerates typical hosta-growing conditions of partial to full shade.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Appetizer' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
