Overview
Registered in 2008, 'Uncle Hirsch' is a small hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Halcyon'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Little Jim'* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive features are the medium blue-green leaves with narrow, yellow, slightly rippled margins and the pronounced waviness of the leaf blade.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 21 inches (53.3 cm) and height of 9 inches (22.9 cm), 'Uncle Hirsch' forms a compact, mound-like clump suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with other small woodland perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its small size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the young, tender foliage in spring.
