Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Splashed Leather' registered in 2000, 'Rhino' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its very shiny, medium green leaves with pure white margins. The leaf surface is notably glossy above and slightly reflective beneath, with a rounded base and eight vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Rhino' forms a dense mound reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with scapes rising 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact, mounded habit makes it suitable for border fronts or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Rhino' shows typical hosta resistance to deer and slugs, though monitoring for slug damage on the broad leaves is advisable in damp conditions.
