Overview

Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Northern Iowa Wrestling' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its heavy, streaked variegation. The broadly ovate leaves feature green centers with white margins that are further streaked with green, white, and yellow, creating a mottled appearance.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height. The leaves, measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide with 6 to 7 vein pairs, are moderately cupped and lightly wavy with a tapered base and slightly shiny surfaces on both sides. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
