Overview
Registered in 2012, this medium-sized cultivar arose from an open pollination of *Hosta* 'Zany Janie'. 'Heat Lightning' is distinguished by its broadly ovate, dark green leaves with creamy white, slightly rippled margins and a subtle streaking of cream into the green interior, creating a luminous, lightning-like effect on the leaf surface.
In the Garden
'Heat Lightning' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in both height and diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its leaf contrast remains sharp. The medium size and good leaf substance make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden; it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the leaves have good substance, standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
