Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Cosmic Mad Scientist' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Hot Flash' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Beer Belly Blues' (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinguished by its blue-green leaves with pale yellow, slightly rippled margins, combined with a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces and moderate corrugation.
In the Garden
'Cosmic Mad Scientist' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial leaf substance—notably greater than that of its mother plant—provides good resistance to foliar damage. The blue-green and gold coloration pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; the medium size makes it suitable for border middles or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, applying water at soil level to avoid leaf spotting. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges; standard slug and deer precautions are advisable for this cultivar.
