Overview

Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, 'Night Train' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and very heavy substance. The broadly ovate, cordate-based foliage measures 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, with 15 vein pairs, and presents a dull surface on both sides.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size and compact habit make it suitable for border fronts or shaded rock gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance provides moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures may still be necessary in damp conditions. Deer may browse the foliage.
