Overview

Registered in 2000, this small hosta is a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Whirlwind' and is distinguished by its dark green leaves with streaked margins and a very shiny surface on both sides. The variegated foliage forms a compact mound, with leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide, featuring four to five vein pairs and rounded bases.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Mystic' is well-suited to partial to full shade, typical for the genus, and reaches a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) with a height of 6 inches (15.2 cm). Its moderate growth rate and small size make it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging, where its shiny, variegated leaves provide textural contrast. It pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, or other small hostas, and is suitable for container cultivation given its compact dimensions.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While hostas are generally susceptible to slugs and deer, the very shiny leaf surface of 'Mystic' may offer some resistance to slug damage.
