Overview

Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Mandelbrot Set' is a large, mound-forming cultivar resulting from the cross (*H.* 'Katrina Joe' × *H.* 'Galaxy') pollinated by *H.* 'Azure Snow'. It is visually distinctive for its rapidly emerging, heavily rippled leaf margins that exhibit pronounced undulation and serration, combined with a blue-green leaf surface bearing a light glaucous bloom.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial mound 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height, with a medium to fast growth rate. It is best sited in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, to maintain its glaucous bloom and prevent leaf scorch. Its large, broadly ovate leaves (12 in./30.5 cm long, 8 in./20.3 cm wide) with heavy rippling make it a strong specimen or accent plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, protect young foliage from slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
