Overview
Registered in 2012 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'June Spirit' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its unusually wide, dark green margins and exceptionally shiny leaf surfaces. The ovate leaves emerge greenish yellow with a gray-green cast, maturing to a green center with a dark green border measuring 0.75 to 1 inch (1.9–2.5 cm) wide, with 9 to 11 vein pairs per leaf.
In the Garden
'June Spirit' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, with moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its tidy habit. The shiny, reflective foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage, though the thick, glossy leaves offer some resistance.
