Overview

Registered in 2005, 'Hubba-hubba' is a large, upright sport of a first-generation seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with white margins, which are broadly ovate, deeply corrugated, and display a complex variegation of dark green streaked with light green, greenish-yellow, pale yellow, yellow, golden yellow, and creamy tones; the leaf surface is slightly shiny above and slightly shiny with a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 42 inches (107 cm) and a height of 32 inches (81 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and its tall scapes—38 to 44 inches (97 to 112 cm)—elevate the green flowers above the foliage. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials that contrast with its broad, corrugated leaves.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are advisable.
