Overview
Registered in 2012, this small hosta resulted from an open pollination of *Hosta* 'Krossa Regal' with an unknown pod parent. 'Happenstance' is distinguished by its upright, vase-shaped clump of dark green leaves with flat margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
'Happenstance' forms a compact, upright clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter at maturity. Its small stature and fast growth rate make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The cultivar exhibits excellent pest resistance, reducing the need for slug and deer management compared to many other hostas.
