Overview

Registered in 2012 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Special Blend', 'Eminence Grise' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its unique grayish cast over blue-green foliage. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, measuring 9.1 inches (23.1 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, and bear a glaucous bloom on both surfaces. Eight pairs of veins are present, with flat margins that are lightly wavy and moderately flat in overall form.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 38.9 inches (98.8 cm) in diameter and 17.1 inches (43.4 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover in shaded areas. The grayish blue-green foliage pairs well with golden or chartreuse companion plants such as *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' or *Carex* species. Its medium size makes it appropriate for mid-border placement or as a specimen in larger containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The glaucous bloom is delicate and may be marred by overhead watering or handling; slug and deer resistance is typical for blue-leaved cultivars but not guaranteed.
