Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Electric Blue' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. 'Creme de Menthe'* and (*H. 'Marilyn'* × *H. 'Tardiflora'*). It is visually distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves that retain their glaucous bloom and color well into late summer, a trait uncommon among blue-leaved hostas.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a semi-upright clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. Its broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves with cordate bases and flat margins are well-suited to partial to dappled shade in typical hosta-growing zones. The blue-green foliage pairs effectively with golden or chartreuse-leaved companions such as *H. 'Sum and Substance'* or *Carex elata 'Aurea'*; its medium size makes it appropriate for mid-border positions rather than containers.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed with barriers or repellents as needed.
