Overview

Registered in 1984 by Walters Gardens, Inc., 'Crown Jewel' is a small sport distinguished by its green leaves with chartreuse cream to white margins. The leaf margins exhibit slight undulations, and the plant forms a compact mound 4 inches (10.2 cm) tall and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

This small hosta is suitable for partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage brightens darker areas. At maturity, it forms a low, spreading clump ideal for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. Its compact size also makes it well suited for container cultivation. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant groundcovers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Crown Jewel' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and apply control measures as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
