Overview

Registered in 1982 by Paul Aden, *Hosta* 'Shade Beauty' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between an unnamed seedling and *Hosta* 'Golden Tardiana'. It is visually distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped green leaves with deep yellow-white margins that exhibit numerous undulations, and by its compact, low-growing habit.

In the Garden

'Shade Beauty' reaches a mature height of approximately 4 inches (10.2 cm) and a spread of 10 inches (25.4 cm), making it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in small areas. It thrives in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, and deer are known to browse hostas; monitor and manage accordingly.
