Overview
Registered in 2011, 'Cosmic River' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Misty May' (pod parent) and a *H.* 'Misty May' seedling (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with green centers, greenish-yellow and creamy white streaked margins, and a pronounced cupped, wavy form.
In the Garden
'Cosmic River' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small stature. Its narrow, rippled leaves provide textural contrast when paired with broad-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so preventive measures may be necessary.
