Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Surprised by Joy' registered in 1999, 'Captain Atom' is a miniature cultivar distinguished by its small green leaves with white margins that are streaked with green. The leaf blades are slightly rippled, with a rounded base and a slight sheen on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Captain Atom' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 9 inches (22.9 cm) and a height of 3.5 inches (8.9 cm), forming a compact, mound-like habit. Its small size and moderate growth rate make it well suited for troughs, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border. It pairs effectively with other miniature hostas or small woodland perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Captain Atom' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
