Overview
Registered in 2000 by Q&Z Nursery, *Hosta* 'Zodiac' is a medium-sized sport of *H.* 'Richland Gold'. Its distinctive foliage consists of green leaves with greenish-yellow to creamy white, slightly rippled margins, creating a crisp variegated effect.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound 16.5 inches (41.9 cm) tall and 31.5 inches (80.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for most hostas, where the variegation remains stable. The blue-green scapes, reaching 22 to 25 inches (55.9 to 63.5 cm), bear flowers in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant perennials of similar scale.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and take protective measures if needed.
