Overview

Registered in 1980 by F. Shaw and introduced by P. Aden, 'Citation' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its green leaves with chartreuse creamy white margins and a pronounced high sheen on the upper surface. The leaf blades measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, with nine pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Citation' forms a mound 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its white margins. The plant's medium size and compact habit allow it to function effectively in both garden beds and larger containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Citation' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and typical hosta-growing zones with moderate humidity and protection from afternoon sun will yield the best foliage quality.
