Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Fried Bananas', *Hosta* 'Frozen Margarita' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its bright greenish-yellow leaves with pure white, flat margins and a notably shiny surface on both sides. The foliage lacks the waxy bloom typical of many hostas, contributing to its glossy appearance. The plant produces scapes 33 to 36 inches (83.8–91.4 cm) tall bearing greenish-gold flowers, some of which are fragrant, a trait inherited from its parent.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Frozen Margarita' forms a dense, fast-growing mound reaching approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter. Its leaves are ovate with rounded bases, moderately folded, and measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with 6 to 7 vein pairs. The bright greenish-yellow centers contrast sharply with the 0.5 to 0.75 inch (1.3–1.9 cm) white margins, making the cultivar effective for illuminating shaded borders or woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the leaf color remains vibrant; excessive sun may cause marginal scorching. The glossy foliage pairs well with dark-leaved perennials such as *Heuchera* 'Palace Purple' or ferns like *Dryopteris* species. Due to its moderate spread, it is suitable for the middle of a mixed border or as a specimen in a shaded container.

Care Notes

*Hosta* 'Frozen Margarita' requires consistently moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor. Standard hosta fertilization in early spring supports its rapid growth. The cultivar is moderately susceptible to slug and snail damage, particularly on the tender new foliage, and deer may browse the leaves. It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, adapting to a range of temperate climates.
