Overview
Registered in 2008 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Halcyon', 'Valley's Lemon Ice' is a small hosta distinguished by its thick, nearly round leaves of green with broad, flat golden-yellow margins. The leaf surface is dull on top and slightly shiny beneath, with ten pairs of veins and a cordate base.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 24 inches (60 cm) and a height of 16 inches (40 cm), with scapes rising 16 to 20 inches (40 to 50 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its compact size makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or containers. The gold-margined foliage pairs effectively with darker-leaved companions such as *Hosta* 'Halcyon' or ferns.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be damaged by slugs and deer, so monitor and protect as needed.
