Overview

*Hosta* 'Ruffian', registered in 2009, is a sport of *Hosta* 'Ruffled Feathers'. This small, mound-forming cultivar is visually distinctive for its heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins that contrast with a lighter, often streaky or edged interior, and for its red-tinted scapes bearing pale lavender flowers.

In the Garden

'Huffian' reaches a mature height of 16 inches (40.6 cm) and a spread of 35 inches (88.9 cm), forming a neat, mounded clump. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its textured foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
