Overview
Registered in 1998, 'Magic Carpet' is a miniature sport of *Hosta* 'Emerald Carpet' distinguished by dark green leaves with narrow, golden yellow margins. The small, upright foliage forms a dense mound with leaves measuring 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, each bearing three vein pairs and slightly rippled edges.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar reaches 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and spreads to 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other miniature hostas, small ferns, or woodland groundcovers such as *Tiarella* or *Heucherella*. Its fast growth rate and small stature also make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Magic Carpet' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage for signs of feeding and take protective measures as needed.
