Overview

Registered in 2003, 'High-rise' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) and *H. hypoleuca* (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its upright, substantial habit and bold foliage: ovate, moderately flat, and lightly cupped leaves display a blue-green center with a golden yellow margin that ranges from 0.25 to 1 inch (0.6–2.5 cm) wide, with slightly rippled edges. The leaf surface is very shiny on top, with a glaucous bloom underneath, and 15 prominent vein pairs are visible on the lower surface.

In the Garden

'High-rise' reaches a mature diameter of 41 inches (104.1 cm) and a height of 25 inches (63.5 cm), with an upright growth habit and a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its substantial leaf substance provides good resilience. The bold, variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
