H. ‘Sunset Grooves’

Overview

'Sunset Grooves' (2011) is registered as a sport of 'Rainforest Sunrise'. Its color entry reads "restless flamed yellow very dark green, heavy rippled margins", naming yellow and very dark green; the record gives no margin width and does not spell out which color sits where. The leaf is very shiny on top and slightly shiny underneath. The registry adds that in full sun it turns golden yellow, and its notable characteristics read "very sun resistant".

In the Garden

It is registered as a mound-like plant 15.7 in (39.9 cm) high and 31.5 in (80.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The leaves are nearly round with a rounded base, lightly cupped, 6.3 in (16.0 cm) long and 4.7 in (11.9 cm) wide, with 9 vein pairs.

How it compares

'Rainforest Sunrise' (2003), its sport parent and in the same show class, is recorded as golden yellow with a 0.5 in (1.3 cm) medium green margin, dull on both surfaces. Its leaf is 5 in (12.7 cm) by 5 in (12.7 cm), nearly round, deeply cupped and intensely corrugated, with 12 vein pairs, on a smaller registered plant: 10 in (25.4 cm) high and 16 in (40.6 cm) across. Choose 'Rainforest Sunrise' for the deeply cupped, corrugated leaf with a defined green edge; 'Sunset Grooves' is the larger plant with a very shiny, lightly cupped leaf.

'Sting' (2011), a sport of 'Anne', is registered with the same leaf size, 6.3 in (16.0 cm) by 4.7 in (11.9 cm), and 9 vein pairs, but a different pattern: creamy white with a 1.2 in (3.0 cm) dark green margin. It is 13.8 in (35.1 cm) high and 27.6 in (70.1 cm) across, and its notes also say "sun resistant", with a "flamed center".
