Overview

Registered in 2011 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Rainforest Sunrise', 'Sunset Grooves' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, heavily rippled leaves with restless flamed yellow centers and very dark green margins. The foliage is very shiny on the upper surface and slightly shiny beneath, with nine pairs of veins and a lightly cupped form.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 31.5 inches (80.0 cm) and height of 15.7 inches (39.9 cm), 'Sunset Grooves' forms a dense, mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. Its notable sun resistance makes it suitable for brighter positions than many hostas, though it performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with some afternoon shade. The small size and compact habit suit it for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders, where its glossy, variegated leaves contrast well with fine-textured ferns or groundcovers.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While more sun-tolerant than most hostas, foliage may scorch in extreme heat; slug and deer resistance is typical for the genus.
