Overview

Registered in 1996, 'Rubber Ducky' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its very shiny, variegated leaves with light green flat margins and a rounded base, combined with burgundy scapes.

In the Garden

This small hosta forms a mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its compact size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Rubber Ducky' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, as are most hostas, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
