Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Omatsu-san Nishiki' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its unusual green-and-gold variegation and the distinctive net-like yellow-green coloration that appears on its flowers. The leaves are ovate with green centers and gold margins, the latter being heavily rippled, and the plant produces scapes bearing flowers that do not fully open.
In the Garden
'Omatsu-san Nishiki' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) and a height of 7 inches (17.8 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature epimediums. Its moderate growth rate and compact habit allow it to be used as an edging plant or in small-scale woodland settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and snails, and monitor for deer browsing in areas where these animals are present.
