Registered in 1999 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Monkey Fist' is a medium-sized variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its distinguishing features include dull, slightly rippled leaves with a very shiny underside, maroon scapes, and a fast growth rate that forms a dense, mound-like clump.

In the Garden

'Monkey Fist' reaches 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its fast growth allows it to fill space quickly. The variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or as a groundcover in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formula. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and apply controls as needed.
