Overview

Registered in 1991 by W. Vaughn, this small-sized variegated hosta resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Kabitan' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Saishu Jima' (pollen parent). Its visual distinction lies in dark green leaves with narrow, small undulations along the margins and a glossy upper surface.

In the Garden

'Maui Rains' reaches a mature spread of 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its compact size makes it suitable for container cultivation or front-of-border placement.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
