Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Saishu Jima' is a miniature variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. Its lance-shaped leaves display medium green, slightly rippled margins with a dull upper surface and very shiny underside, while the foliage is wavy and lightly twisted, contributing to a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Saishu Jima' reaches a mature diameter of 13 inches (33.0 cm) and a height of 7 inches (17.8 cm), with a fast growth rate that makes it suitable for small spaces, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with other miniature perennials such as small ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars. Its compact size and attractive green scapes, reaching up to 19 inches (48.3 cm), also make it an effective edging plant along pathways.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Saishu Jima' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
