Overview

Registered in 1996 by H. Kelsey and subsequently registered by P. Ruh, this small hosta cultivar forms an upright, fast-growing clump with variegated leaves. The foliage is distinguished by dark green, slightly rippled margins and a very shiny surface on both the upper and lower sides, with a rounded leaf base.

In the Garden

'Hosta' Kelsey' reaches a mature spread of 24 inches (61.0 cm) and a height of 13 inches (33.0 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its compact size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in the garden.
