Overview

Registered in 1997 by P. Ruh, this small hosta cultivar produces mound-like clumps with variegated foliage. Its leaves are distinguished by light green margins and a very shiny upper surface, with a slightly shiny underside and tapered base.

In the Garden

'Hirao Splendor' forms a compact mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) high and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, troughs, or the front of borders. Its small size makes it an appropriate candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar may require protection from slugs and deer, as is common for hostas with tender foliage.
