Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek for the American Hosta Society, 'Green Whiskers' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins and contrasting darker green veins. The ovate, lightly corrugated leaves display a dull upper surface and a thin glaucous bloom beneath, with margins that shift from golden yellow to green as the season progresses.

In the Garden

This compact, mound-forming hosta reaches 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and spreads to 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials. Its fast growth rate and tidy habit also suit container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
