Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Granny's Rouge' is a small, variegated cultivar distinguished by its upright, flattened growth habit and the unusual red coloration that extends from the petioles into the leaf bases. Its leaves emerge light yellow with green margins, and the red petioles remain a prominent feature throughout the growing season.

In the Garden

This compact hosta reaches approximately 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and spreads to 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, forming a flatter, less mound-like shape than many cultivars. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its variegated foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
