Overview

Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Ersatz' is a large, mound-forming cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. nigrescens* 'Elatior'. It is visually distinctive for its very shiny, dark green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a rounded base, combined with exceptionally tall scapes reaching up to 69 inches (175.3 cm).

In the Garden

'Ersatz' reaches a mature spread of approximately 55 inches (139.7 cm) and a height of 24.5 inches (62.2 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. The tall scapes, bearing light green flowers, provide vertical interest above the foliage mound.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, shiny leaves may be attractive to both pests.
