Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Opipara' introduced by Walters Gardens, Inc. in 1996, 'Emerald Green' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its upright habit and variegated foliage. The leaves are dark green with slightly rippled margins, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide, with a slightly shiny upper and lower surface and a tapered base.
In the Garden
'Emerald Green' forms a substantial clump reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in height and 18.5 inches (47.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its upright growth and fast spread allow it to fill space quickly, pairing well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The deep green scapes rise to 43 inches (109.2 cm) and bear typical hosta flowers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, though the slightly rippled leaf texture offers minimal resistance.
