Registered in 2000 by an unknown hybridizer, *Hosta* 'Ebony Knight' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with flat margins and a dull upper surface contrasting with a slightly shiny underside. The variegated foliage, combined with a compact habit and moderate growth rate, gives this plant a neat, structured appearance in the garden.

In the Garden

'Ebony Knight' reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other small woodland perennials. Its small size and moderate growth rate also make it an excellent choice for troughs or mixed shade containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from deer and monitor for slug damage, particularly on the dull-surfaced leaves.
