Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Courtesy' is a small, mound-forming variegated cultivar resulting from a 1985 cross between *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and a seedling of *Hosta venusta* (pollen parent). It is a sibling to 'Leather Sheen' and is distinguished by its ovate leaves with medium green margins and a prominent variegated center.
In the Garden
Reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height with a moderate growth rate, 'Courtesy' forms a tidy, mound-like clump suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or shaded woodland settings. Its small stature and compact habit make it well suited for container cultivation. It pairs effectively with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
