Hostas by Light Tolerance
«Shade plant» is a simplification. Different Hosta cultivars want very different light — deep shade burns blue cultivars green, while gold varieties need 4–6 hours of morning sun to colour up. Match the cultivar to your site.
Sun-tolerant (gold-leaved)
Gold and chartreuse cultivars hold colour in 4–6 hours of morning sun. 'August Moon', 'Sum and Substance', 'Sun Power'.
Partial sun (variegated)
Variegated cultivars need bright light to maintain pattern but burn in afternoon sun — perfect for east-facing borders.
Deep shade (blue)
Blue cultivars hold their waxy glaucous bloom only in genuine shade. Direct sun melts the wax and turns them green.
Bright shade (giants)
Giant hostas need bright dappled light to fully size up — full deep shade often produces undersized specimens.
