Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Sunny Side Up' is a small hybrid derived from *H. 'Spritzer'* (seed parent) and *H. yingeri* (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its ovate, very glossy green leaves with flat, golden yellow margins, producing a bright, bicolor effect.

In the Garden

This small hosta forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for gold-margined cultivars, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its modest size makes it suitable for containers, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and take protective measures if these pests are prevalent in the garden.
