Overview

Registered in 2014, *Hosta* 'Strike it Rich' is a medium-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Liberty' (pod parent) with unknown pollen parentage. It is visually distinctive for its green leaf centers broadly edged in greenish-yellow to gold margins, producing a strong tricolor effect as the season progresses.

In the Garden

'Strike it Rich' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 30 inches (76 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its broadly ovate, flat leaves measure 9 inches (23 cm) long by 6 inches (15 cm) wide, with eight vein pairs and a cordate base; the leaf surface is dull on both sides. The green scape rises 36 inches (91 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade and is suitable for border plantings, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in typical hosta-growing zones. Its substantial size makes it effective as a groundcover or accent plant when paired with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured shade perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and benefits from protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
